How to Use Proxy Server on Google Chrome? - Complete Guide

Proxy server actually acts as a client server that connects your computer to the website you are trying to access. By default, Internet settings are configured on Windows operating systems to automatically detect the Internet settings.

For those of you who don’t have much knowledge about the proxy server, proxy server is a computer or server that provides computers an indirect network connection to another computer or server.

In most of the cases, proxy servers are extensively used by the Internet users to keep their identity anonymous and hide their real information. Sometimes, network administrators use proxy servers to limit access to the Internet.

If you don’t know how to configure the Google Chrome web browser to use proxy server to connect to the Internet then you should follow the steps by step guide below.

How to Use Proxy Server on Google Chrome

The steps outlined below will guide you in setting up proxy server settings on Google Chrome web browser.

Step #01 – Launch Google Chrome with administrator privileges. It is important that you run Chrome web browser as administrator, otherwise your changes might revert back automatically.

In case you don’t know how to run Chrome with administrator privileges, right click on the Chrome icon and select “Run as administrator”. (As shown in the screenshot)

Step #02 – Now, Windows will prompt you to for a confirmation if you really want to launch Google Chrome with administrator privileges to make changes to the computer. Click on the “Yes” button to launch Google Chrome as administrator.

Step #03 – Click on the Menu icon  (located in the tool bar at the upper right corner of the web browser) which will open customization and control options for Google Chrome.

Step #04 – Click on “Settings”.

Step #05 – Scroll to the end of the Settings page where you will find a text that says, “Show advanced settings…”. Click on this text to reveal advanced settings options.

Step #06 – Now, scroll down further until you find a section named, “Network”.

Under the “Network” section, there will be button that says, “Change proxy settings…”. Click on that button to open Internet Properties prompt window.

Step #07 – In the “Internet Properties” window, there will be a “Connections” tab. Click on it.

Step #08 – Now, under the “Connections” tab, in the “Local Area Network (LAN) settings” section, you will see a button that says, “LAN Settings”. Click on this button to open Local Area Network settings window.

Step #09 – In the LAN settings window; make sure that the check box that says, “Automatically detect settings” is unticked.

Step #10 – Next, in the same window, there will be a “Proxy server” section. Under this section, there will be a check box that say, “Use a proxy server for your LAN”, put a tick on the check box to enable it.

Now you will notice that “Address” and “Port” boxes are activated along with the “Advanced” button, which allows you to configure advanced proxy server addresses and port numbers for different server types, including HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP. However, in most cases, single proxy server address is used for all the server types.

Furthermore, in the advanced settings, there is also an option for “Exceptions” that can be used to bypass complex addresses. Here you can enter those addresses that you want to browse without proxy. Please note that each exception address must need to be separated with a semicolon.

Step #11 – So, in the “Address” box, you will need to enter the proxy server address. And in the “Port” box, you will need to enter the port number.

For demonstration purposes, in the above screenshot we have entered “127.0.0.1” as address and “8080” as a port number. But, we believe that your network administrator must have provided you the proxy address and port number so you have to enter those in the boxes.

Step #12 – Just below the address box, there is a check box that says, “Bypass proxy server for local addresses”. Putting a check mark on this box will bypass all those addresses you provided in the “Exceptions” box under the Advanced settings.

Step #13 – Once all the information has been entered, click on the “OK” button on all three opened windows to apply the changes.

Step #14 – Congratulations! You have now successfully configured your Google Chrome web browser to browse Internet through your provided proxy server address(es).
